THE DAY I FINISHED…

A surprise came to my inbox today — this photo, which I'd never seen before, sent to me by my friend Nichelle Tramble.

Nichelle took this picture of me in Wyoming in the autumn of 2004. She and I had been residents at an artist's colony (The UCross Foundation) for the past month, and that afternoon I had just finished writing the first draft of a book called "Eat Pray Love".

We had gone for a walk to celebrate, and we found this tree, which had grown straight out of the body of a rusty old car — a sturdy and impressive example of the amazing life that can be generated out of ruin and decay.

I climbed that tree. I was happy.

Goodnight, and thank you,
LG
