My old friend David (whom I used to take creative writing classes with when we were only 20 years old!) wins the prize for "most stacked" when it comes to bedside reading! Jeez, David…I can't believe I never noticed that you had such a voluptuous figure…

Elizabeth, my old friend, I know *exactly* how you feel. May I present my bedside table:

ARE YOU STACKED?

You know what I really love? A great stack of books on the bedside table. My whole life, wherever I've gone, there's always been a sweet and rotating stack of books waiting for me — and often I am reading all of them at the same time.

I must confess that I have selectively adopted the ebook mode of reading, as well (nothing is better for travel than to have your sweet stack of books stored digitally and nearly-weightlessly in your purse) but still, there is nothing like the bedside table, the reading lamp, the rainy day, the pile of pages, the heavenly literal stack.

Here's what I've got going right now, if you can't make out the titles:

Elizabeth Strout — "The Burgess Boys"
Rachel Joyce — "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry"
Jill McCorkle (see previous post) — "Life after Life"
Herman Koch — "The Dinner"
George Saunders — "Tenth of December"
Alice Munro — "Dear Life"
Michael Coogan — "God & Sex: What the Bible Really Says."

What's in your pile, dear ones?

Happy lazy day,
Liz

BOOK OF THE DAY:

"Life After Life", by Jill McCorkle.

Dear Everyone —

Last night I went to hear the luminous Jill McCorkle read from her new novel, "Life After Life". I've been a fan of Jill's for a long while, and have always wanted to meet her, and — as this is her first novel in 17 years — now seemed the moment! She is absolutely great. It's so wonderful to meet someone you have always admired, only to discover that they are even lovelier in person than you had hoped. I wish you could all have been there for the reading…she was so completely charming and marvelous.

Anyhow, I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a beautiful, heartfelt, funny, warm and smart story. "Life after Life," people. It's a rare delight.
