A GREAT REVIEW!
Hey everyone — wonderful news! I just got a terrific (and starred) review in Booklist for my new novel, "The Signature of All Things." I won't reprint the whole review here, because there are SPOILERS, but I think it's safe to share these two tidbits without ruining the story for anyone:
"Gilbert, the author of the phenomenally successful memoir Eat, Pray, Love (2006), returns to fiction with her first novel in 13 years, and what a novel it is! Taking her sweet time and digressing at will into areas ranging from botany to spiritualism to illustration, she tells the rich, highly satisfying story of scholar Alma Whittaker…"
Then there's a bunch of stuff in the middle of the review about the storyline, which I wont reveal. Then, the conclusion:
"Gilbert, in supreme command of her material, effortlessly invokes the questing spirit of the nineteenth century, when amateur explorers, naturalists, and enthusiasts were making major contributions to progress. Beautifully written and imbued with a reverence for science and for learning, this is a must-read."
A must-read, everyone? Did you hear that? That means YOU MUST READ IT! Or else…? Well, I'm not sure what will happen if you don't read it. No specific punishments or fines were mentioned. So on further consideration, I suppose it's probably perfectly safe of you not to read it, if you do not wish to. However, as an obedient person myself, when somebody as esteemed as Booklist tells me that I must read something, brother, I go read that stuff!
So, if you would like to obediently pre-order your copy of "The Signature of All Things", here is your link:

"BE YOURSELF. EVERYONE ELSE IS TAKEN." Oscar Wilde
Good morning, Beautifuls —
I was visiting an old friend recently and she was telling me about helping her sweet and lovely son apply to an elite private school which he had his heart set on attending. They were driving to the interview, and my friend was trying to figure out how to best encourage her nervous boy. Here is what she told him: "You know, it's going to be really hard to make an impression on these people, because they spend their lives meeting the best and brightest and most talented kids in the whole country."
Doesn't sound very encouraging so far, right?
But then she added, "So if you really want to impress the interviewer today, you have absolutely no choice except to walk into that room and completely be yourself. Because the only kid he has never met before…is you."
These wise and kind words reminded me of this Oscar Wilde quote I've always loved, so I thought I would share it today. This sentiment works so well as a guide across any number of situation — it's great advice for the workplace, for being a creator, for love.
Your own voice, your own character, your own gifts, your own offerings. Live that stuff fully. It's the only way to make an impression in a world of seven billion people.
Big, big love…
Liz
ps — My friend's son knocked it out of the park in his interview, by the way. They loved him.
