MY FAVORITE LINE OF ALL LITERATURE….
Dear Ones —
Those of you who are familiar with this page have heard me speak before about my love for the poet Jack Gilbert (no relation to me, I'm afraid!) who died in late 2012.
Specifically, you have seen me quote this line of his:
"We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world."
The Atlantic magazine called me the other day and asked me to discuss my favorite line in all of literature, and I spoke about that poem, that bold sentiment.
The transcript of the conversation is here…it is so beautiful, because Jack Gilbert was so beautiful and wise.
